The Business Incubation Centre (BIC) of CERN Technologies, launched this summer by PARK INNOVAARE, CERN, the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of North-Western Switzerland (FHNW), is pleased to announce the winner of the new entrepreneurship program and its first incubatee: Securaxis. The official awards ceremony took place this Monday, November 12, 2018, at the StartUpForum Aargau in Brugg-Windisch.


Switzerland's first Business Incubation Centre (BIC) of CERN Technologies aims to bridge the gap between science and industry. It is helping start-ups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) develop new products and services using accelerator and related technologies.

The first edition of the program attracted the attention of many founders both from Switzerland and abroad, who proposed projects leveraging a large spectrum of applications of CERN's technologies. The candidates participated in a two-phase competition, during which they were able to identify CERN’s IP and expertise to help them solve specific problems in their business or improve products and services. Of the six finalists who presented their project in a pitch workshop, the independent Selection Committee chose the first incubatee – Glenn Meleder, with Securaxis and its RTExD product – who will benefit from a two-year incubation program. It includes extensive technological support from CERN and PSI experts, business coaching, and – last but not least – starting capital of CHF 50,000.

The winning project aims to solve the safety and security issues arising in the context of a smart city. Using AI, sound localization, and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, Securaxis has developed a real-time high-energy event detection sensor to identify and characterize sounds. It is designed to be integrated into the environment where video camera installations are not suitable for technical or privacy reasons. Their device will help authorities (police, traffic authorities, fire departments) overcome daily challenges by providing early awareness signals in the case of explosions or extreme energy events, such as fires or collisions, thus keeping them informed of an ongoing situation in real time and reducing the number of false alarms.

Securaxis has already been given a green light for testing its technology on three pilot sites in the canton of Geneva and is planning two more pilot projects in Abu Dhabi (UAE) and Taipei (Taiwan). To be fully operative in large areas and complex scenarios, however, it needs to integrate its current technology with a high-performance data-gathering and control system. For this challenging step, Securaxis is planning on implementing CERN's know-how and expertise in the area of large-scale data-gathering, monitoring, and control solutions based on the so-called C2MON framework.

With the estimated total addressable market growing up to USD 3.1 billion by 2022, Securaxis' device and business model have tremendous chances for success. During the incubation period, the company will continue to develop the device in close collaboration with CERN and PARK INNOVAARE to further leverage accelerator-based large-volume data and control system competencies.
