Energy and sustainability

Research focus on energy and sustainability

Sustainable energy supply systems are a research focus at PSI, as is battery research in connection with new materials. The development of technologies for the use of renewable energy sources and low-emission energy utilisation of future energy supply systems are further focal topics.

The Canton of Aargau is the leading work and research centre in the fields of energy and electrical engineering. The focus areas of the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI in energy research are the development of technologies and processes for the utilisation of renewable energy sources, the low-emission conversion of energy and the safe and reliable supply of electrical energy. This includes:

  • Fuel cells and electrolysis
  • Biomass and catalytic processes
  • Energy storage and flexible energy supply
  • Energy scenarios
Energy System Integration Platform (ESI)

One of the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI's flagship projects is the Energy System Integration Platform (ESI). Thanks to its modular structure, the platform enables specialists to test various alternative energy systems individually or in combination in close proximity. The platform focuses on energy storage and flexible energy supply, including power-to-gas technologies. The ESI platform, which is being developed in several stages and is a central technology platform, allows all stakeholders in the energy value chain to participate, submit their research questions and launch joint development projects.
